Dell Voice: The New VoIP Exclusively For Canadians

The launch of the new mobile application Dell Voice was announced earlier this week. Dell Voice is a free VoIP calling app created by Dell Canada and Fongo to give Canadians a less costly alternative to communicate with one another. The application is tailored to avoid the troubles of daytime calling limits and long-distance charges. Dell Voice uses VoIP technology through users’ 3G, 4G or WiFi connection on the Fibernetics network, a Canadian CLEC network that Fongo has privileged access to. By using the network, not only can users choose a local Canadian phone number for their Dell Voice, they can also place emergency VoIP 911 calls.

John Stix, the co-founder and chief marketing officer of Fongo stated that Dell Voice was intended as a tool to help Canadians spend less money or even to eliminate the need altogether for a voice plan. The service can certainly help small business owner save money on their mobile phone bill, especially those who rely heavily on their cell phone to manage and grow their business.

Dell Voice Will Help Canadians Keep In Touch For Virtually No Cost

The app is available to Android and iOS users for free at the Apple App Store and Android Market accordingly, and can also be downloaded for the desktop, with the option to buy credits for those who want to call long distance or overseas. BlackBerry users can expect to get their hands on it in March. Dell Voice comes loaded with features that one would normally have to pay for in their plan, like free voicemail, caller ID, call waiting and free local and long-distance call to most of Canada to name a few. While the app and features are free, ads will been seen throughout the app, a common scene in free apps and a $25 charge is applied should you wish to transfer your phone number to the Dell Voice service. Calling to most Canadian cities is free, and for international call, rates can be as low as 2¢ per minute.

Since the launch, the reviews on both the Android and Apple App Store have been most in the range of  3.5 stars out of 5. Users enjoy the free features that would normally cost them a monthly fee on their cell phone plan and some simply like the fact that it’s a VoIP service made specifically for Canadians. A slight disadvantage is being able to get a local phone number only in BC, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec leaving the rest of the country in the dark. And even if you live in one of the four provinces, certain areas like Thunder Bay in Northern Ontario isn’t free to call to and you will not be able to get a number from that area. Apple users’ most common complaint of Dell Voice’s latest version is getting a “No Connection” error when trying to place calls.

Available For Free At Apple’s App Store & The Android App Market

One Android user noted the app’s heavy battery consumption while using it. I downloaded the app on my 3rd generation iPod Touch and started on the registration process, but stopped because I was feeling uncomfortable being required to give out my contact number. The email I provided exceeded their field length, which I thought was odd that they would put a character limit on the email typed in. Since you will be able to place 911 calls and choose a phone number with Dell Voice, you will be asked to give out your address, so if you prefer to give out as little personal information as possible it will be something to consider before getting the app.

I do believe, however, that this app is perfect for those who are looking to save a few bucks a month in voice plans and enjoy some of the bonus features like caller ID and voicemail to stay connected to friends, family and clients across Canada.
