We’ve been dreaming of sort of technology become part of the mainstream ever since watching films like the Minority Report. However holographic interfaces and devices haven’t been adapted into the advanced tablets and smartphones of today, which also raises the question as to why it hasn’t.
The technology has been available for a number of years, but many tech-analysts claim that holographic interfaces aren’t nearly as precise as their developers would like them to be. The current state of the tech industry is the metaphorical equivalent of a 100 meter Olympic sprint, where a single mistake or pause can knock you out of the top spot virtually as fast as got there.
No one company; with any real sense that is, will risk releasing such a revolutionary and futuristic product without rigorously testing it and making sure it it flawless. Any hype that would be created by a tech-company releasing a holographic interface would be quickly dissolved if the technology wasn’t anything other than perfect.
However, the really great news in all this is that Apple recently patented a “pico projector” and also purchased the domain name applepico.com. This definitely depicts Apple intention and interest in holographic interface technology and is in the company’s best interest as they shift more and more towards touch-based products (e.x. iPad 2 , iPhone 5)
The technology is something we’ll be sure to see in the near future. The only question is what company will take the lead on the technology given all the risks (and potential benefits) of doing so?
