Recently something very peculiar has happened as a direct result of the huge rise in sales from Apple devices. It seems as though the mobile version of Apple’s Operating System has finally overtaken the desktop version of the OS, in regards to web traffic.
This is because of a trend that started a couple months ago when the web traffic from Apple computers started to head south, and thanks to a huge surge in sales from Apple mobile devices, the traffic from the mobile version of the OS started to climb pretty steadily.
Apple Dominating Mobile Market
To be honest, this is not all that surprising. Apple mobile products have been selling like never before, and the 4th quarter of last year was an extraordinarily good one for just about everyone at Apple. The iPad 2 was selling like never before and sales of the iPhone 4S continued to rise steadily into the quarter.
Although sales of Macbooks were also on the rise, the higher price of them meant that they were simply unable to keep up with the sales of iPads and iPhones. Both represent less than 10% of the market share, so even though one has taken over the other, they still have to do a lot of catching up to other operating systems like Windows 7 and XP, both of which are very popular.
The interesting thing here is not that iOS has overtaken the OSX operating system, but rather the overall level of traffic from OSX has recently taken a dive. This is bizarre considering the level of brand loyalty that Apple gets to enjoy with their products. The likely explanation here is that the actual traffic itself has not been reduced, but it has not been growing at the rate of other OS’, which would then make it appear that its growth is now negative even when it is not.
