The projects “spread the word” approach is having waves of success for the elegant and sleek peripherals. They are made of tempered glass, are spill and stain resistant, wireless, and have absolutely no other parts than what you see limiting the chances of sticky keys and all sorts of other hassles.
Jason Giddings who is the President and CEO of Giddings Product Development is the man behind the project and has set up a neat hierarchy of pledge dollar values based on what you will get for each amount. At the very least, the lowest amount offered which is $10 will allow the user to try and choose a name for the product, and a successful picking will grant you a production multi-touch keyboard and mouse too!
How It Works
According to the product page, the design is actually quite simple and the creator is surprised that nobody else has released a similar product. “The design is based on a touch screen technology known as FTIR or Frustrated Total Internal Reflection. There are basically infrared LEDs placed at the edge of the glass hidden in holes. When the glass is touched it frustrates the reflection and the IR light is diffused downward, out of the glass, allowing the camera to see it.” The rest is picked up by software on your computer and will relay the coordinates and other information to your computer for accuracy and response.
The pledge that has been set up is to fund the prototypes being produced for those who want to get their hands on something that could go virally main-stream. The original goal was $50,000 however that has already been well surpassed. This is a clear indication that this product is going to become more than just any old concept; it’s going to become a reality once a properly functioning prototype is completed.
Price
You can pre-order one by being a backer of the project, and $350 will get you both the mouse and the keyboard. Each can be had separately for $150, and $250 for the mouse and keyboard respectively. The group with the biggest backers is for both devices, which isn’t much of a surprise as they pair so elegantly together. Oh, and did we mention it’s going to have tactile lighting and sounds!
