Stop SOPA App Graces Androids: Uses Barcode Reading

These days the term “There’s an app for that” seems to become more and more true. Whether it is an app to help you decide what to name your baby or an app to find the nearest dog parks, there really is an app for that. One of the latest to hit the Android App Marketplace would be the Stop SOPA app, that was nothing short of a work of genius.

In case you don’t already know, SOPA stands for the Stop Online Piracy Act, and this bill has triggered quite the response on the internet. As threats of censorship become more and more real, those looking to stop it are coming up with some clever ways to make their voices heard.

How-To Identify SOPA Supporters

The Stop SOPA app works in conjunction with a normal barcode reader.  What you do is you go to your grocery store to pick out what you want to buy. Let’s say that you want a bottle of Coca-Cola; you would then proceed to scan the bottle with your Android phone.

The app will then tell you whether or not that specific company supports SOPA. If they do, then it is assumed that you would look for an alternative for your purchase. In this case you may end up with some Pepsi as Coca-Cola is a supporter of SOPA.

The anti-SOPA app puts the power to seemingly influence the decision on the SOPA bill in the hands of the people, and it is available to download completely free of charge. Although this app and how it works may seem like something that is rather insignificant in fighting the SOPA bill, those that were following the decisions of GoDaddy (where thousands of GoDaddy customers left them causing the company to quickly change their viewpoints- a mistake that cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars) will be able to tell you that these boycotts can be incredibly effective.
